Protein-arginine deiminase type-4

PADI4 belongs to the protein arginine deiminase family. It is shown to catalyse deimination of arginine in a calcium dependent manner, in order to convert them to citrulline. PADI4 catalyses deimination at R2, R8, R17, and R26 position on H3. This activity inhibits the methylation of these residues by CARM1. Deimination process leads to transcriptional repression of target genes (PMID: 15339660). It also catalyses the deimination at histone H2A and H4 at the arginine 3 position in human granulocytes (PMID: 15823041). PADI4 expression levels are significantly upregulated in many malignant tumours (PMID: 19183436). Recently reports show that PADI4 associates with HDAC1 to mediate transcriptional repression (PMID: 19581286).
