Abstract:
Inflammation is a widely-shared innate immune response in animals. Genetic studies using fruit flies have played a defining role in clarifying our understanding of innate immune reactions including inflammation in invertebrates and vertebrates.
My lab has been interested in analyzing the role of cellular immunity against natural infections and how these mechanisms go awry in Drosophila models of chronic inflammation.
To examine the possible existence of eicosanoids or eicosanoid-like molecules, we have undertaken computational, biochemical, and genetic studies. I will present our recent work on the discovery of aspirin-triggered anti-inflammatory eicosanoid-like mediators as well as protein modeling data that predict the possible existence of a functional eicosanoid pathway in Drosophila.
