Abstract:
In this talk we will outline our experience of working with and for "emergent user" communities in India and Africa to develop future technologies. As well as explaining our methods and rationale, we will provide case studies of their application to PV and digital devices deployed in Rwanda and India.
We hope this talk will interest anyone who wants to learn more about how to involve "everday" community members in research and innovation; and, those who are interested in uses of PV technologies in diverse contexts.
About the Speaker:
Matt Jones is the Head of Science at Swansea University, UK. He led the work to develop the Computational Foundry (www.computationalfoundry.eu), the CHERISH Digital Economy Centre (http://cherish-de.uk/) and the newly announced EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (http://people-first.best). He is a member of the Sunrise Advisory Board and has been working on human-centred computing in India and Africa for over 10 years. More at : www.undofuture.com

Thomas Reitmaier completed his PhD at the University of Cape Town, where he designed, developed, and deployed content creations and sharing platforms to suit the needs and functions of rural and urban communities in South Africa. Thomas is now a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the CHERISH Digital Economy Research Centre where he collaborates on a portfolio of applied, interdisciplinary research projects that address pressing societal challenges. These range from designing renewable energy interfaces with solar engineers for resource-constrained, off-grid communities in Rwanda to co-creating assistive technologies to improve health outcomes with patients and clinical psychologists at two hospitals in Wales.
