What the World is Made of ? From the Latest Results of the Large Hadron Collider to Physics Outreach for Schools and the General Public

Prof. Arnulf Quadt
Georg-August University, Gottingen

Abstract: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva is the particle physics collider with the highest energy world-wide. Hence it provides the oppurtinity for precision tests of physics of elementary particles as well as maximum sensitivity to new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this presenatation, elementary particle physics as pursued at the LHC will be introduced and latest results will be presented. In addition, the project "PiA-Physics in Advent" shall also be introduced as an example outreach project for schools and the general public to foster their interest in science and STEM education in general. It is internet-based and encourges children and high-school students to perform simple physics experiments with household-type material.
