Abstract: Introduced by Kurt Hensel 115 years ago, p-adic numbers became rapidly a crucial tool in the study of algebraic numbers and Diophantine equations. The role of these numbers seems to increase every day. In this talk, I'll try to explain to non experts what they are and to give an idea of what they are good for.
