Mechanical properties of amorphous solids

Abstract: The materials which lack long-range order and do not flow on an experimental time-scale are termed as amorphous solid. The mechanical response of these materials, such as foams, colloids, and metallic glasses, is an active research field for material science, engineering, and in the context of the physics of disordered systems. The amorphous solids behave elastically on the application of small load, and stress increases on average upon the increase of external strain, although this increase is punctuated by small plastic events. When the load becomes higher than some critical value (yield stress), it flows in a non-linear steady-state fashion and displays constant stress on average even though the strain keeps increasing, and this branch is also punctuated by plastic events. The quest for understanding what happens to the material before and after yield transition still a challenge and hot topic in the materials community. Here, we show it numerically, after employing an overlap order parameter which compares two glassy configurations, that in athermal quasi-static conditions, the system hardly changes at microscopic structure but yielding shows a first-order transition between a very restricted set of accessible configuration to a very rich set of configuration including marginal ones.
