We will begin with a review of the moonshine conjectures (now a theorem),
relating representations of sporadic groups, modular forms and partition
functions in conformal field theories. We then discuss generalization of
moonshine to mock moonshine which relates group representations, mock
modular objects (including Ramanujan's mock theta functions) and special
partition functions in string theory.
