The precise shapes and positions of organs in the body cavity underpin their physiological responsiveness and effective function. Taking the renal system in flies as a model, I will discuss the tissue interactions that occur during embryonic development, the signalling pathways that mediate these interactions and the cellular responses to them that together regulate the morphogenesis of a characteristically looped and precisely positioned tissue.
