Recent advances in electron cryomicroscopy has allowed structures of membrane proteins to be obtained without the need for crystals. Using two multi-subunit membrane protein complexes from inner mitochondria namely ComplexI and ATP synthase as examples I will highlight how the technique of single particle cryoEM is used to obtain structures. Further I will illustrate how distinct states of these enzymes can be identified by computational sorting.
