Thu, Aug 18, 2016, 05:30 PM to 06:30 PM at LHC 101

Prof Rajendra Bhatia
Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi

In his distinguished mathematical career, Professor Bhatia has made contributions to harmonic analysis, geometry and matrix analysis. He is also known for his immense service to the mathematical community. For example, he founded the famous book series Texts and Readings in Mathematics in 1992: this series publishes treatises written by experts from all over the world in important areas of mathematics and makes them available at very reasonable prices.
Abstract:

<div style="\\\\\\\\"text-align:" justify;\\\\\\\\"=""> Abstract: A substantial part of Mathematics has its roots in one single problem. Many of the mathematical concepts like function, infinity, convergence were formulated and made precise because of this problem. We will go through a brief history of this problem beginning in 1747 and continuing till today.
