About the Speaker:
His research interests include major contributions to matrix inequalities, calculus of matrix functions, means of matrices, and connections between harmonic analysis, geometry and matrix analysis.
Abstract:
<div style="\\\\"text-align:" justify;\\\\"=""> The problem of defining a suitable geometric mean of positive definite matrices is of intrinsic interest in operator theory, physics and electrical engineering. Such a mean of two matrices has been used since the 1970's. For several variables the problem has been solved only about 10 years ago. Apart of its mathematical interest it has found lots of applications in very diverse areas, We will give an introduction to the major ideas involved.
