Zeroth law in non-equilibrium - a hot needle in water

Tue, Nov 15, 2016,   04:00 PM at Physics Seminar Room 31, 2nd Floor, Main Building

Dr. Pradeep K. Mohanty
Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkatta

Abstract :
I will give a short introduction to non-equilibrium systems and discuss
whether they can be described by energy or free energy like thermodynamic
functions. We then ask what happens when two non-equilibrium systems
are in contact and exchange some quantity, say mass or energy.
Will the systems eventually evolve to a stationary state where a certain
intensive thermodynamic variables, like chemical potential or temperature,
equalizes ? If so, under what conditions ?

The talk is aimed at general physics audience.
