Abstract :
In 1960, Wigner wrote a very influential article titled `The unreasonable effectiveness of Mathematics in Sciences". This has led to a lot of debate amongst philosophers of science. In particular, in 2013, Derek Abbott wrote a counterpoint, titled "The reasonable ineffectiveness of Mathematics", arguing that actually mathematics is not so effective after all. I will summarize the conflicting positions, and discuss my own views. The talk is non-technical, and intended to be intelligible to undergraduates.
