A crucial issue in the cognitive neuroscience of visual perception has centered on the extraction and processing of relevant information from the environment. In particular, the relative role of magnocellular and parvocellular pathways in object and face perception remains under investigation and debate. Laycock et al (2007) have proposed a ‘magnocellular advantage’ model of visual perception wherein an initial rapid feedforward sweep through the dorsal stream activates parietal and frontal areas that further feeds back into the primary visual cortex. It is likely that the impairment in certain higher-level perceptual processes in developmental conditions (like Autism) is due to modifications, delays or disruption in magno-versus-parvo pathway inputs (Awasthi et al 2012; Laprovete et al, 2014).
