Dynamics in Social Networks: Consensus vs. cleavage

Thu, Jun 29, 2017,   04:00 PM to 05:00 PM at Seminar Room 34, 2nd Floor, Main Building

Prof. S. Lakshmivarahan
School of Computer Science University of Oklahoma

Abstract: This talk will provide an overview of different classes of algorithms for dynamic models interacting in a directed weighted graphs for opinion formation - consensus vs. cleavage. Conditions for the convergence of these algorithms which critically depend on the topological properties of the underlying graphs will be discussed. These algorithms have applications to the control of a system of interacting robots.

A short Bio: After completing his PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in 1973, S. Lakshmivarahan served as a member of the inaugural faculty at the Department of Computer Science, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India (1973-75) and held two post-doctoral appointments -at the Division of Applied Mathematics , Brown University (1975-76) and Electrical Engineering at Yale University (1976-78). He then joined the faculty at the School of Computer Science,  University of Oklahoma in 1978 where he is the George Lynn Cross Research Professor since 1995. He is author/coauthor coauthor of 6 graduate level books. He has supervised/co supervised 31 PhD dissertations and 42 MS Theses. He has held short term visiting positions at various centers of higher learning in Japan, China, Taiwan, India, Germany, England, Canada, USA, Mexico and Brazil. He is the Fellow of the IEEE (1973), ACM (1975) and IEEE Life Fellow since 2013. His interests are in Applied Mathematics and Computation.
