Now and then, a scientific direction grips the popular imagination, and a number of unrealistic properties are attributed to it. In the 1950's, it was flying cars, in 1960's it was space travel, and in the 1970's it was Artificial intelligence. On the other hand, there are occasional developments that are, in fact, far-reaching and result in long-term changes. The invention of the transistor and the Internet are two such changes. In this talk, I will discuss where would one place quantum computation.
