Let E/F be a quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields of characteristic 0. Let G be a reductive group defined over F. There are two approaches which attempt to describe the irreducible representations of G(E) that are distinguished by G(F), one relates this class to representations which come as base change lifts from a quasi-split form of G, while another deals with a certain symmetry condition. In these talk we will study these two questions for the concrete case of general linear groups.
