Physics

The low-redshift 3CRR radio galaxies

Thu, Jan 18, 2018,   11:30 AM at Physics Seminar Room 31, 2nd Floor, Main Building

Prof. Mark Birkinshaw
University of Bristol

Abstract :

High-resolution radio, optical, infra-red, and X-ray data are now available for the lowest- redshift 3CRR sources. This important set of objects provides our best information about the physics of the radio galaxy phenomenon, and how relativistic outflows from the cores of the active galaxies affect their neighbourhoods. In this presentation I will review the results of the projects based on Chandra and Spitzer data that I have led, and describe some extreme distortions of radio structure that our mapping campaign has discovered.
