Probing disorder using optical spectroscopy across phase transition in semiconductors

Wed, Jan 17, 2018,   02:30 PM at Physics Seminar Room 31, 2nd Floor, Main Building

Dr. Pankaj R. Sagdeo
Indian Institute of Technology, Indore

Abstract

In the past optical spectroscopy has been widely used to probe the band gap in semiconductor materials. The Tail part of the optical absorption (Urbach Energy) is known to provide information about the electronic disorder present in the semiconductor materials. Recently we have investigated the behavior of Urbach Energy across the phase transition in well-known classical ferroelectric material (BaTiO3) and observed that the electronic disorder produced due to the structural phase coexistence appears in much wide temperature range.

During the talk at IISER Pune I will also share some of the recent experimental results in which the potentials of optical spectroscopy to probe ‘disorder’ present in the sample will be discussed.

Dr. Sagdeo completed graduation from Nagpur University, and obtained Master’s degree in Physics from University of Pune (2002) and Ph.D. from Indore, working on electron crystallography under Dr. N. P. Lalla (UGC DAE CSR) Indore. In 2008 Dr. Sagdeo joined BARC as a Scientific Officer-D and in June 2012 he joined Indian Institute of Technology, Indore. Dr. Sagdeo is presently working on the physics of highly correlated electron systems using specialized instrumentation developed by him.
