It is difficult to find climate indices explaining year-to-year variability of Indian monsoon rainfall. The best result known is the modest -35% correlation with El Niño. Higher explanatory power can be reached by nonlinear relationships between sea surface temperatures and monsoon rainfall. In this ongoing work, we are looking for such relationships that would hold over time, into the future.
