Science from Aditya-L1: an upcoming ISRO mission to study the Sun's corona

Wed, Apr 25, 2018,   04:00 PM at Physics Seminar Room 31, 2nd Floor, Main Building

Dr. Dipankar Banerjee
IIA, Bangalore

Abstract: Aditya-L1 is India’s first dedicated scientific mission to study the sun. Aditya- L1 mission will be inserted in a halo orbit around the L1, which is 1.5 million km from the Earth. The satellite will be launched around 2020 by PSLV-XL from Sriharikota, India. It will carry seven payloads which will provide observations of Sun’s  Chromosphere (NUV) and corona (Visible, soft and hard X-ray and NIR). In addition, particle payloads will study the particle flux emanating from the Sun and reaching the L1 orbit, and the magnetometer payload will measure the variation in magnetic field strength at the halo orbit around L1. In this talk I will give an overview of the different payloads and its science objectives.
