Abstract:
A healthy pool of mitochondria is essential for neuronal function and survival. In fact, genes that are implicated in mitochondrial dynamics are often linked to neurodegenerative diseases. We conducted a forward genetic screen to study neuronal maintenance through which we identified a series of mutants with altered size or abundance of mitochondria. We found that these changes are often induced as a compensatory response to defects in mitochondrial physiology. In my talk, I will discuss the regulatory mechanism of mitochondrial fusion protein MARF/Mfn2 in order to regulate the size of mitochondria under physiological stress.
