Webinar 5: You say ‘inquiry’ and I say ‘what?’

Date: October 10, 2020

Time: 4:00 pm

Live on YouTube

Speakers: Dr. Gareth Price (Sheffield Institute of Education, Sheffield Hallam University, UK)

Abstract: Inquiry is at the heart of scientific research and has been suggested as the best possible basis for the creation for science education courses that reflect the reality of science as practised by professional scientists. Supporters of inquiry also claim that it can also help those who do not go on to study science at higher levels or to pursue science careers because it encourages an evidence-orientated and analytical thinking. However, the word ‘inquiry’ means a range of different things to different people and when it is deployed in educational contexts the variation increases. This talk will review some of the common understandings of inquiry and attempt to organise these into a convenient model to aid thinking about inquiry (whatever it is!).
