Title: Breast Cancer Management: Early Bird Catches the Worm!

Speaker: Chaitanyanand B. Koppiker, M.D – Breast Oncosurgeon and Medical Director, Orchids Breast Health Center, Pune

Date and Time: July 08, 2015 at 1:30 pm

Venue: LHC 101, IISER Pune

Synopsis:
Breast Cancer (BC) occurrence is alarmingly on the rise with new cases detected across various age-, socio-economic and urban-rural strata. The disease is acquiring an urban and young profile with peak incidence around 45 years. “Early detection” remains the most important strategy to counter this dreaded disease. However, lack of awareness in women about breast self-examination and/or routine mammographic screening leads to negligence and costly delay in diagnosis.
In his presentation, Dr. Koppiker will provide a 360 degree view on the multimodal nature of Breast Cancer management. This will include the importance of healthy lifestyles, patient self-examinations to regular mammography screening, advanced diagnostic and surgical options, targeted chemotherapy and radiation treatment plans, post-treatment vigilance and patient rehabilitation. Recent global perspectives on Breast cancer management will be put forth vis-a-vis the Indian scenario. He will also share some important emerging and future global trends in Clinical practice as well as translational biomedical research on Breast Cancer. Despite the modern-day medical advances, enhancing the quality of life of affected patients and survivors has been a heretofore unaddressed area in breast cancer management. Various modalities that mitigate the psychological trauma associated with diagnosis and breast removal surgery will be discussed. The talks will also emphasis the importance of holistic care in managing the disease with strong advocacy for integration of clinical oncology with scientifically validated principles from the wisdom of complementary and alternative medicine.
Dr. Koppiker will then discuss his contributions to the fight against Breast cancer in India via his multi-disclipinary work in clinical practice (i.e., setting up of center of excellence for Breast Oncoplastic Surgery and Treatment in Pune, India), training (i.e., starting an International School of Oncoplastic Surgery in association with East Anglia University, UK) and biomedical research (i.e., convening biomedical consortiums for translational research).
