About the Exhibition: Scientists and citizens have been collaborating to study or discover various scientific phenomena ranging from measuring water levels, identifying plants to finding galaxies. For science and academia, the inclusion of citizens in research offers great potential, particularly when set against the background of digitization. Ways of collecting and processing data have changed radically in recent years. Mobile internet and powerful smartphones make it possible nowadays to gather and deliver relevant research data almost anywhere.
Many citizen scientists find it highly motivating to be able to make a real contribution to current research and gain in-depth knowledge at the same time.
A total of 19 citizen science projects run by the University of Zurich (UZH) and other Swiss universities are the subject of this poster exhibition on participatory research. The projects are from varying disciplines, drawn on methods that involve citizens in their research. The five key areas include: language, cosmos, nature and landscape, mankind and health, history and digitisation.
The exhibition is organized by
UZH Graduate Campus and swissnex India and supported by
Stiftung Mercator Schweiz. The exhibition features talks by UZH representatives and researchers who will give insights into their projects and UZH’s initiatives in Citizen Science.
Why India?
Citizen Science is an area of common interest for Indian and Swiss academia and science communicators. The exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to initiate a dialog between researchers and citizen science enthusiasts from the two countries.The exhibition will be showcased first at
IISER Pune as Pune city is known for its active participation in citizen science initiatives.
Speaker profiles
Prof. Daniel Wyler is the Professor (retired) for theoretical physics at UZH and former Vice President for Medicine and Science from 2010 to 2015. His present activities include building up Citizen Science initiatives in Zurich and collaborations with Indian institutions.Daniel Wyler has held several positions at the University and was a member of the Swiss National Science Foundation’s research council from 1997 to 2006. The focus of his research lies in theoretical elementary physics. He is particularly interested in predicting and discovering new elementary particles, which is a major area of research at the LHC in Geneva. Dr. Wyler will be giving a talk on UZH's involvement in CITIZEN SCIENCE and the exhibition at IISER, Pune.
Dr. Claudine Leysinger is the General Manager of UZH Graduate Campus since 2015. She obtained her PhD in history at Columbia University with a dissertation on the history of photography, anthropology and archaeology in nineteenth-century Mexico.She is a member of the Foundation Board at the Foundation for Basic Research in Human Sciences as well as the Academia Engelberg Foundation. Dr. Claudine Leysinger will speak about UZH Graduate Campus and the involvement of its junior researchers in citizen science initiatives.
