About the Chief Guest:

Dr Selvin Christopher is a distinguished engineer-scientist and at present is the Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Director General, DRDO. Prior to this appointment, he was the Programme Director of Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system and Director, Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS), Bengaluru. He is well known as the Indian scientist responsible for the design and manufacture of India’s first indigenous AEW&C system, a supersonic defence fighter jet.

He obtained his BE (Hons) in Electronics and Communication Engineering from University of Madras (1978), MTech in Microwaves and Radar Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur (1980) and PhD from IIT Madras (1985). After his PhD, he worked with Bharat Electronics, Ghaziabad as a senior engineer in designing antennae for Digital Tropo-scatter Communication systems. Dr Christopher joined DRDO at Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), Bengaluru as a scientist in 1988, where he led a team to create the Automated Planar Near Field Measurement Facility, which paved way for the electronically scanned array antenna evaluation. He designed and developed slotted array technology, which is used in several airborne and missile projects and later exported to Poland. He also led the development of the Maritime Patrol Airborne Radar Supervision 2000 for deployment in the Indian Navy. In 2004, Dr Christopher joined Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) in charge for design, development, fabrication and qualification of the AEW&C system to specific operational requirements of the Indian Air Force through multicenter DRDO. He was appointed Director, CABS in 2007 and elevated to the rank of Outstanding Scientist in July 2008 and as Distinguished Scientist in July 2012.

Dr Christopher is a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineers (FNAE) and the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE). He is a member of SEE and IEEE. He has several peer recognitions for his contributions in the field of microwave antennas and radar systems, such as JC Bose Gold Medal, DRDO Scientist of the Year Award, DRDO Technology Group Award, NRDC Award and Dr VM Ghatge Award. Dr. Christopher has published over 70 papers and holds copy rights and patents for many of his works. Dr Christpopher was bestowed with the national civilian honour of “Padma Bhushan” in 2012.
