The Gifts of Harmony: Differences and Common Threads between Musical Cultures

(with violin performance)

Felix Padel has dual trainings as an anthropologist/sociologist and as a musician. As a musician he was trained in Western classical violin by leading players/teachers Emmanuel Hurwitz and Sheila Nelson, and in the Dhrupad vocal tradition by Ritwick Sanyal of the Dagarvani tradition in Varanasi, and Madhu Bhatt-Tilang of Jaipur. He is also a self-taught performer of dance songs from Eastern Europe and the Middle East, especially Greek, Jugoslav and Kurdish music.
In this lecture, he brings together aspects of his musical and anthropological training, to explore with examples, the power of music, how different cultures express key elements through the medium of music, song and dance, and how music can take us to realms beyond the essential ambiguity of words.
