About the speaker:
Dr. Yusuf K. Hamied is an Indian scientist and the Chairman of the 80 year old Cipla, a truly international generic pharmaceutical company.
He completed his doctorate in organic chemistry under Nobel laureate Prof Alexander Todd at Cambridge, UK. He then took over the leadership of the Indian drug giant Cipla, running the company with a strong focus on “affordable health care”. He is best known internationally for defying large Western pharmaceutical companies to provide generic AIDS drugs and treatments for other ailments, primarily affecting more than 6 million patients in poor countries such as Africa. His role in the battle for making mass antiretroviral treatment available in Africa is portrayed in the documentary Fire in the Blood (2013 film).
He strongly believes in giving back to the scientific community as exemplified by his institution of the Yusuf Hamied Centre at Christ's College, Cambridge, Salters program for the training of deprived school children/teachers, and Cipla palliative care and training center for the patients beyond cure.
He is a great lover of sports and Music. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour in 2005. He has also received CNN-IBN Indian award in 2012 and was chosen among the 25 greatest Global living legends by NDTV. One of the prestigeous honors bestowed on him is the Honorary Doctorate in Science by Cambridge University in 2014 for his service to the society. He is the first-ever recipient of the newly founded Alumni Medal by Cambridge University in 2016.
Various awards and recognitions will be presented during the ceremony to students and staff for their outstanding performance and contributions to Institute.
