Tuberculosis: Understanding the Disease

Invitation Card for the Ceremony

Date: Saturday, April 07, 2018

Time: 11:00 am

Venue: Sir CV Raman Auditorium, Lecture Hall Complex, IISER Pune

About the Chief Guest: Dr. Shekhar Mande obtained his PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1991. After Post Doctoral training in the laboratory of Prof. Wim Hol at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, and the University of Washington, Seattle, USA, he returned to India to set up an independent laboratory at the Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh. Subsequently between 2001 and  2011 he was at the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad. Since September 2011 he is the Director of National Centre for Cell Science, Pune.
Originally trained as a crystallographer (Biological Macromolecules), throughout his independent career he has combined structural work on biological molecules with biochemical and biophysical studies. His principal interest has been on proteins derived from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Through several studies he has demonstrated the non-canonical properties of mycobacterial chaperonins, electron transfer processes and other studies. He has also developed computational methods in the prediction of genome wide protein:protein interactions and has been actively developing methods to analyse the same. Through the combination of biochemical, biophysical, crystallographic and computational analyses, his laboratory has been able to obtain novel insights into the physiological properties of M. tuberculosis.
Dr. Shekhar Mande is a recipient of B M Birla Young Scientist Award and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Biological Sciences. He is also a fellow of all the three premier Science Academies of the country.
