General Relativity: The First 100 Years   Mar 23, 2015

Aakashganga invites you all to a public talk to be delivered by Prof. Thanu Padmanabhan. The talk is a part of Celebrating Einstein: A 100 Years of Relativity , a public talk series, commemorating the centenary of General Theory of Relativity.

General Relativity: The First 100 Years

Speaker: Prof. Thanu Padmanabhan, Distinguished Professor, IUCAA, Pune
Date: March 23, 2015 (Monday)
Time: 06:00 pm
Venue: Sir CV Raman Auditorium, IISER Pune

Abstract:
The major paradigm shift in our understanding of gravity came with Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, about 100 years back. The speaker will describe the developments which led to this, the key new ideas introduced by General Relativity and some of the major consequences. In the last part of the talk, the speaker will describe some recent developments in this subject which suggest that gravity could be an emergent phenomenon like elasticity or fluid mechanics.

About the Speaker:
Prof. Thanu Padmanabhan is a theoretical physicist and cosmologist whose research spans a wide variety of topics in gravitation, structure formation in the universe and quantum gavity. He has made significant contributions to the analysis and modelling of dark energy in the universe and the interpretation of gravity as an emergent phenomenon.
