Informal Talk: Galaxy Evolution Through Absorption Lines  Apr 09, 2015

Aakashganga, the IISER Pune astro club, is organizing an informal lecture to be delivered by Dr. Neeraj Gupta (IUCAA, Pune).

Title: Galaxy Evolution Through Absorption Lines
Speaker: Dr. Neeraj Gupta
Assistant Professor
Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune
Date: April 09, 2015 (Thursday)
Time: 06:00 pm
Venue: LHC 101, IISER Pune

Abstract: A key question in modern astrophysics is to understand how the star formation in galaxies proceeds and leads to the present-day Universe. In recent years, radio and optical observations of the local Universe have established a strong relationship between the star formation rate and the properties of the cold atomic and molecular gas in galaxies. Although the overall star-formation history of the Universe is known to very high redshifts, very little is known about the evolution of cold gas beyond the local Universe. In this talk, the speaker will present recent advances made in the field of galaxy evolution using this technique and the breakthrough observations that will be possible with the upcoming Square Kilometer Array (SKA) precursors.

About the Speaker: Dr. Neeraj Gupta is an Assistant Professor at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA). His research focuses on interstellar medium of galaxies. He is involved in various observational projects with current and upcoming radio telescopes to trace the evolution of cold atomic and molecular gas content of galaxies using absorption lines. He is a co-Principle Investigator of the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS). He is also interested in observational techniques relevant to large blind searches of absorption lines at radio wavelengths. Before joining IUCAA, he has worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Australia Telescope National Facility in Sydney, Australia (2007-2010) and the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy in Dwingeloo, the Netherlands (2010-2013).
