Lecture on Mars Orbiter Mission  Apr 08, 2015

The next lecture in the Science Club Lecture Series:

Mars as seen by Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) and future Planetary Missions by India

Dr. Prakash Chauhan, ISRO, Ahmedabad

Date: Wednesday, April 8, 2015

Time: 05:00 pm

Venue: LHC 103, IISER Pune

Abstract:
India’s first mission to Mars known as Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM)  will successfully complete its designated life time around Mars on April 24, 2015The mission is now extended for another six months. The MOM satellite is carrying five instruments and out of these, three payloads i.e. Mars Colour Camera (MCC), Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (TIS) and Methane sensor for Mars (MSM) instruments are developed at Space Applications Centre, (ISRO), Ahmedabad. All three instruments have specific science objectives associated with each of them, e.g. MCC will monitor Mars surface and will help in studying dust devils and morphology of Mars; TIS will help mapping the temperature of Mars surface. Methane detection instrument is trying to detect methane in Martian atmosphere with significant sensitivity. In this talk images acquired by different instruments of the Mars Orbiter Mission will be shared with students. Discussion on the future mission to Moon, called Chandryaan-2 will also be done. Possibility of carrying out research with Moon and Mars data will also be discussed.
