Title: The Role of Mathematicians in K-12 Mathematics Education
Abstract: I shall talk about the role of mathematicians in mathematics education. There is a certain unavoidable conflict between mathematician and mathematics educators (i.e., professors of mathematics education). I shall present examples of this conflict over time, beginning with the "New Math" of the 1960's; these examples are drawn from my experience in the US and Western Europe. As far as I know, the conflict plays out slightly differently in India (and other Asian countries). Nonetheless, some of the conclusions are valid quite generally, I believe.
About the speaker: Prof. Schmid is a Dwight Parker Robinson Chair Professor of Mathematics at Harvard University. He has made fundamental contributions to several areas of mathematics, particularly in Hodge Theory, Representation Theory and Automorphic Forms.
