About: The landscape of life sciences (biology, biomedicine, biotech and all the rest) is changing rapidly. Massive amount of data is produced, increasing exponentially with time. New techniques are invented every week, and existing techniques are getting cheaper. Physical and mathematical sciences are increasingly integrated into, or used as tools in, the life sciences. There are hundreds of new venues for publishing original research, many promoting open access (but often expensive). Exciting new career options are available now, even as academic positions are getting extremely competitive. The funding scenario is highly dynamic, and scientists working on fundamental problems are facing difficulties coping with the increasing emphasis on translational output. There are ethical and moral concerns about playing with life processes. Life science research is at the heart of nearly every economic sector. How does a budding life scientist navigate all these issues, and what is she/he supposed to do to prepare for the future? In this panel discussion, a group of distinguished life scientists will discuss some of these issues and offer insights.
