Time: 6:00 pm
Venue: Room 103, Lecture Hall Complex, IISER Pune
Abstract: Michael Atiyah was one of the greats of twentieth century mathematics. His contributions are in diverse areas; Algebraic Geometry, Topology, Differential Geometry, Mathematical Physics, to name some ; and brought to these fields new insights even while proving results of great import. His collected works runs into more than 500 pages. In this lecture I will attempt to give some glimpses of his varied contributions. This will be naturally be constrained by my limited knowledge of his extraordinarily vast and profound researches; in particular I will concentrate largely on his works in topology and index theory and will be rather terse and short in my treatment of his other works.
