Abstract: The human body is composed of trillions of cells that live and work together. These cells are very similar in how they are put together, but differ significantly in their size and shape, which, in turn, could affect how they function.  Cells in multicellular organisms tend to self-assemble into tissues, organs and organ systems. The size, shape and ability of cells to self-assemble into more complex structures may depend not just on the kind of cells in a tissue, but also how the tissue microenvironment is organised.  Cells derive their structure and shape from a couple of forces acting on the cell membrane – (a) force exerted by the cytoskeleton network inside the cell pulling at and pushing on the membrane, (b) force exerted by the binding of the cell to the components of an extracellular matrix (ECM) that surrounds the cell and is also pushing on the cell boundary and (c) force excreted by cell-cell interactions, mediated through cell adhesion molecules (CAM) like cadherins on the cell membrane.
This talk will explore how cells stick to the matrix and to each other and how this controls their size, shape and function.

Age Group: Ideally Class 7 - 10. However, we welcome other students to attend.
