Exciting Science Group is happy and excited to announce the next Popular Science Talk.
International Year of Periodic Table: From Democritus to Mendeleev's World
Date: Sunday, December 29, 2019
Time: 10:00 - 11:15 am
Speaker: Dr. Sakya Sen (CSIR-National Chemical Laboratoy, Pune)
Venue: New Lecture Hall, Smt Indrani Balan Science Activity Centre, IISER Pune
Abstract: One hundred and fifty years ago this month, Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev first came up with his periodic system of the chemical elements – what we now think of as the periodic table. In celebration of this event, the United Nations have proclaimed 2019 to be the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. In this talk, the speaker will try to explain how the periodic table went from a sketch to an enduring masterpiece, how the iconic arrangement came about, what it means and how it works. The periodic table is not just a typical wall decoration in high school science classrooms, it is also an exceptional tool for scientists to understand, and even predict, the properties of all the elements.
Age Group: Ideally Class 7 - 10. However, we welcome other students to attend.
Registration is FREE and on a first-come-first-serve basis
