Public lecture on ultra-low temperatures by Prof Luis Santos May 18, 2016
IISER Pune has organised a Public Lecture:
The world of the ultra-low temperatures
by
Prof Luis Santos
(Director, Institute of Theoretical Physics, Leibnitz University of Hannover, Germany)
Date: May 18, 2016
Time: 4.00 pm
Venue: CV Raman Auditorium, IISER Pune
Abstract:
What does it actually mean when we say that something is cold or warm? What is “temperature”? What happens when we cool further and further down? We will briefly explore together some of the fascinating physics of ultra-cold matter, including electricity conductors that conduct without any resistance, fluids that flow without any viscosity, particles that behave like waves, and thousands of atoms that act as a single one.
About the Speaker:
Prof Luis Santos’s research revolves around the intriguing physics of ultra-cold matter, a cross-disciplinary field at the interface between atomic and molecular physics, quantum optics, nonlinear physics, and condensed-matter physics. His specific interests in recent years include the physics of dipolar and multi-component gases, synthetic magnetism, one-dimensional atomic gases, cold atoms in optical lattices, disordered atomic gases, and strongly-correlated gases out of equilibrium.
Prof Santos studied at the University of Salamanca (Spain), where he got his PhD in 1998. Between 1999 and 2004 he was postdoctoral researcher at the University of Hannover (Germany). In 2001 he was Sofja-Kovalevskaja Awardee of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He then was an assistant professor at the University of Stuttgart (Germany) from 2004 to 2006. Since 2006 he is full a professor at the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Leibniz University of Hannover. Since 2010 he is the Director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Uni-Hannover.
