About the Artist

Lakha Khan, 65, is a sarangi player and vocalist, and perhaps the greatest exponent of the sindhi sarangi (Indian folk fiddle). He is one of the last remaining Manganiyars to have mastered this complex 27-string bowed instrument. An accomplished instrumentalist who straddles the traditional and classical genres, and vocalist, he sings in more than six languages and dialects. He made his debut US tour in April 2013 with 11 concerts in 9 cities across the country with recent performances at the 2011 Edinburgh Folk Music Festival and The Amarrass Desert Music Festival, New Delhi (2011). Highly recognized in India for his contribution to folk music, he has received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi award for his contribution to Rajasthani folk music, and recognition by the Marudhara Foundation (Kolkata).

A featured artist on ‘Mitha Bol’ (2011, Amarrass Records, nominated for 'Folk Album of the Year' at the Global Indian Music Awards 2012), his first solo album "At Home: Lakha Khan" was released on Amarrass Records in December 2012 and features single-take field recordings made at the artist's home.
