Abstract:
A discussion session will follow the talk.
Prof Gadgil will talk on Science for a symbiotic society. In this lecture, he will discuss the human quest for environmental sustainability and how several factors hinder it. He will discuss various case studies including nuclear power plant disasters and the case of Pachgaon, in Maharashtra, that has started following new ecological practices. The discussion that follows will be along these lines.
About the Speaker:
Prof Madhav Gadgil needs no introduction. He is the author of several policy changing reports, texts, books and research papers. His research interests range from mathematical ecology, conservation biology, ecological history and human involvement in India's environment. He is also the founding member of the Centre for Ecological Sciences, IISc, Bangalore. For his immense contributions to the field of ecology and more importantly to efforts for a sustainable environment in India, he has won several awards and recognitions including the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar award, the Volvo environment prize, and most recently, the Tyler Prize for Enviromental Achievement. He has also been conferred with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.
