CoESME, IISER Pune is organizing:
Workshop on Experimental Physics
for undergraduate Physics Teachers
Date: July, 8-10, 2019
Venue: IISER Pune
About the Workshop: The need for a paradigm shift in the undergraduate (UG) learning and teaching methods has long been felt. It is imperative that contemporary UG teaching should involve instrument building, experimental work with technically ingenious but straightforward solutions, data analysis at a non-trivial level, theories of scaling and modeling. It is also important that the students develop independent thinking, critical judgment and other skills to effectively communicate with the teachers or peers.
In view of this, through this workshop, UG teachers will be introduced to some landmark experiments from different topics in Physics. Highlight of all these experiments is that many of them have been developed in-house and student participation has played a major role. Participants will carry out the experiments by themselves, record data and present results. They will also have hands-on exposure to the construction of the apparatus. It is envisaged that the participants will be able reproduce these experiments in their respective colleges in due course.
Experiments to be covered in the workshop:
- Generation and propagation of electromagnetic waves along a transmission line using a Lecher wire.
- Radiation pattern of a dipole antenna.
- Study of Field Emission using Field Emission Microscope (FEM)
- Investigation of glow discharge: I-V characteristics and optical spectroscopy
- Characterization of helical and horn antenna for Radio Astronomy.
- Optical telescope for astronomical observations
- Thermionic emission
- Black Body Radiation
- Absorption Spectroscopy
- Electron Diffraction
The list is representative, as some experiments may not be possible depending on weather conditions.
Highlights:
· Conducted by senior Physics faculty members from IISER Pune: Prof. C. V. Dharmadhikari; Dr. Bhas Bapat
· For teachers of bachelors and masters courses in Physics
· Includes Demos & Hands-on sessions to introduce participants to landmark experiments from different topics in Physics
· No registration charges (only 30 seats available)
· Stay arrangements may be made for selected outstation participants
Eligibility: Teachers teaching B.Sc. or M.Sc. courses with at least a masters and two years of teaching experience. Highly motivated/exceptional candidates with lesser experience may be considered subject to selection criteria and availability of seats.
