Workshop on LaTeX  Oct 10, 2017

COESME at  IISER Pune in association with the Mathematics Department is organising:

Workshop on LaTeX

Dates: 10-14 October 2017.

Venue: Baskara Lab, Department of Mathematics, IISER, Pune.

Overview: LaTeX is a document preparation system which is widely used in academics. Though it was invented for writing mathematics “beautifully” during 1985, nowadays, LaTeX is used not only to write documents in mathematics but also physics, computer science, engineering, economics, psychology, social and political sciences. LaTeX is being widely used to create and publish books and large documents. Over a period,  LaTeX has evolved, and now it can draw complicated molecules in organic chemistry, list bibliography in various ways at the stroke of a feather, handle complicated languages and scripts such as Sanskrit, Tamil and Chinese, write and edit dramas and poems. In contrast to Microsoft Word and Pages, LaTeX can handle large documents very easily. In India, mathematicians and physicists have been using LaTeX for a long time.

In this extensive workshop, we wish to introduce and teach LaTeX to non-math and non-physics people also. Starting from the ABC of the programme, we shall introduce the advance techniques. Staying loyal to the birth-purpose of LaTeX, we shall discuss important techniques for LaTeX mathematics. LaTeX for Indian languages is another area which is not popular in India itself; we shall teach LaTeX for India languages also. We shall have three hours of lecturing and two hours of practising sessions, every day.

Aim:

  • Teach the basics of LaTeX;
  • introduce advanced techniques for writing mathematics;
  • introduce advanced techniques for editing and formatting documents, preparing large documents such as books and memoirs;
  • teach how to do presentations using LaTeX (Beamers);
  • XeLaTeX for Indian scripts and languages;
  • depending on the number of interested participants, we shall discuss the package “chemfig” for chemistry, writing drama and poems, and other requests from the participants.

Criteria for application: Applicants should be mainly UG/PG teachers. Other interested candidates may also apply.

Facilities:

  • At most 30 participants shall be selected.
  • We shall arrange the facilities for staying and food for the selected participants; these facilities can be used a day before and a day after the workshop. We cannot extend it more.
  • The reimbursement for the travel expenses is subject to availability and on an actual basis up to ₹ 500.
  • There is no daily allowance.
  • Participants shall get desktops, with LaTeX installed, to use during the workshop.

i.   Window users click here to see how to install complete LaTeX

ii.  Mac users click here to get full LaTeX for OSX called MacTeX

iii. Linux users install full LaTeX called TeXLive and the editor TeXmaker using this link

iv. Click here to download the editor TeXworks for Windows and Linux MacTeX complete comes with TeXworks

The font Shivaji is NOT a unicode font and must NOT be used.

A good keyboard layout for the Indian language you wish to work with: preferably InScript keyboard layout. InScript is called “Indian keyboard” on Linux systems and “Devanagari” on Mac. Please avoid transliterating softwares such as Google transliterator.
