Workshop on Translating Clean Energy to Rural India  Sep 04, 2017

Workshop on Translating Clean Energy to Rural India

Dates: September 4-8, 2017

Venue: IISER Pune

About: The University of Edinburgh, UK, and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, India, are jointly organising a four-day workshop from 4th-8th September 2017 in Pune to discuss innovative scientific solutions on clean energy research for rural India. This workshop is part of the Newton-Bhabha Researcher Links programme, and is co-funded by the British Council under the Newton-Bhabha Fund, and by the Royal Society of Chemistry. It aims to bring together UK researchers with their counterparts in India, to exchange ideas and solve global problems.

Increasing access to sustainable energy for all by 2023 is one of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. To generate and store electricity, to sustainably cook or to locally purify water can be transformative. Externally developed technology however, does not always meet the real needs of potential beneficiaries, and questions can also arise around maintenance, repair and end-of-life of technology. The workshop will bring together physical scientists/engineers working in energy technologies, with social scientists working in delivery and study of the use of technology in the rural Indian context. Each of these groups will include participants from both India and the UK to build robust networks and share ideas.
