Dr Seema Sharma elected Convener of JetMET Working Group of CERN collaboration  Apr 28, 2016

Dr Seema Sharma, assistant Professor of Physics at IISER Pune, has been elected as Convener of the JetMET Physics Object Group. This working group is a part of the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Switzerland.

LHC is the highest energy accelerator in the world. The CMS is a particle detector designed to detect a range of particles and phenomena produced during the high-energy collisions in the LHC. The CMS experiment is a huge international collaborative effort involving over 3500 researchers from 42 countries. IISER Pune joined this collaboration in September 2014. Jets are experimental signatures of quarks and gluons (protons constituents) which are produced in the proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The missing transverse energy or MET is interpreted as an imbalance in measured final momenta of all the particles produced in these collisions. It signals the presence of weakly interacting neutral particles, like neutrinos, which do not give a visible signature in the detector. Jets and MET form the heart of the physics program at the LHC and are used extensively in almost all the measurements and searches for new particles.

Dr Sharma will start as the Convener of the JetMET Physics Object Group of the CMS from September 2016. Dr R. Schoefbeck from Ghent University, Belgium is the other Convener of the project.
