IISER Pune Launches Earth & Climate Science Program  Apr 08, 2014

The Earth Sciences is undergoing revolutionary changes with newer knowledge and information emerging about the Earth as a number of inter‐related systems: solid earth, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere. This approach that views Earth as a single integrated system is emerging as a powerful tool to understand this large and slowly evolving system that has been in dynamic equilibrium for billions of years, cycling matter and energy through its sub‐systems and to provide a resource for the survival of its habitat. The Earth system is large, complex, multi‐variant and highly non‐linear resulting in complexity, ambiguity and uncertainty in the processes responsible for shaping the planet and its resources. Its understanding obviously calls for integration of subjects like physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biology along with advanced computational methods.

Considering the necessity and importance of building a state of the art academic program, IISER Pune has launched a new initiative focusing on Earth and Climate Science. Current strengths of IISER Pune in natural sciences and mathematics in both teaching and research will provide a strong foundation to build an interdisciplinary earth and climate science program. In addition, this new program will have strong linkages with the neighboring institute, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune. Teaching would exploit deeper conceptual isomorphism to unify apparently disparate contexts and provide hands-on capabilities in concept, experiment, fieldwork, and computation.

Research in Earth & Climate Science program at IISER Pune would include the following broad areas.

  • Computational Geoscience
  • Characterization & Dynamics of near surface Earth system
  • Deep Earth Exploration
  • Water‐Science; Ocean
  • Atmosphere
  • Solid Earth Interaction Process Modeling
  • Earth and Life Evolution and Interaction

Prof. Shyam Rai will head the Earth and Climate Science program beginning August 2014. We invite faculty with proven research competence; imaginative research proposals, which will greatly benefit (and benefited by) the unique Indian subcontinent; and an ability to communicate fundamental concepts to get in touch with us and learn more about career opportunities at the program.

For further information, please contact Shyam Rai, Professor and Chair, Earth and Climate Science Program at IISER Pune.
