IISER Pune and Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP), France have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a dual degree programme (DDP) in Solid Earth Science for students pursuing BS-MS at IISER Pune. This will be a part of the IPGP Master of Research programme.

One to two students admitted per year would visit IPGP for ten months from September to June and will receive a monthly stipend from IPGP for this period. The selected students will be enrolled at both IPGP and IISER Pune during the fifth year of their BS-MS course. Successful students will receive BS and MS degrees from IISER Pune, and Master of Research degree from IPGP upon fulfilling academic requirements for both institutes.

Students with a strong background in mathematics, physics & computing, who have completed adequate courses in Earth Science will be eligible to apply. An internal committee of IISER Pune will shortlist names from the applications received. The students enrolled in DDP will have to earn 60 credits at IPGP, in addition to their basic credit requirements at IISER Pune. They will initiate their thesis project at IISER Pune from May to August, and continue their work at IPGP from September to next June. They will then return to IISER Pune to complete their thesis requirements.

Faculty members from both institutes will teach modules and will jointly supervise the Masters Projects. The DDP students will submit two reports, one at IPGP and the other at IISER Pune, which will be respectively examined by the two institutes as per their own norms.
