Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has instituted a new blended three-year Bachelors in Science course in collaboration with IISER Pune and University of Melbourne (UoM). The programme was launched on 6thof May by Dr Vasudev Gade (Vice-Chancellor, SPPU),   Prof KN Ganesh (Director, IISER Pune), and Prof Margaret Sheil (Provost,  University of Melbourne).

In the first phase, the BSc (Blended) course will be implemented at Modern College (Shivajinagar), Pune from the academic year 2016. Prof BS Madhava Rao is the coordinator of this programme from IISER Pune. Faculty members from IISER Pune, UoM and SPPU have together developed the curriculum. They will continue to provide support in the implementation and quality assurance of the new course.

The course aims to strengthen science education at the undergraduate level and will offer an internationally recognized degree. Students will be taught three basics sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), and Mathematics in the first two years and can opt to specialize in one of these subjects in their final year. Currently, the course at Modern College will offer specialization in Biology in the third year.

The curriculum will have clearly defined teaching and learning outcomes along with a transparent evaluation system. The quality assurance and evaluation procedures will be determined jointly by University of Melbourne and IISER Pune.
