Prof. Shashidhara Elected President of IUBS  Aug 03, 2019

Prof. LS Shashidhara has been elected as President of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). The announcement was made at General Assembly of the Union which took place this week at Oslo, Norway where the new Executive Council of the Union was chosen. His term will be for the next three years.

IUBS, established in 1919, is celebrating its centenary this year. It is a non-governmental, non-profit organization which provides an international platform for cooperation and interaction among scientists, with 110 National Academies and international scientific Associations and Societies as members. It promotes open science and open data policy, and formulates guidelines related to bionomenclature, biodiversity, public health, agriculture, etc. In alignment with United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals, IUBS has been working in recent years to catalyse international efforts on research and education in biology to enable populations to address 21st century problems like food security, nutrition, climate change, loss of biodiversity.

The Indian National Science Academy (INSA), a key member of the IUBS, nominated Prof. Shashidhara for this role. Prof. Shashidhara is a developmental biologist. His research group studies evolution and functional genomics of appendages, using the fruit fly Drosophila as a model system. He is a recipient of the CSIR Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award and DST JC Bose Fellowship, and has been Vice-President of INSA. He has also served at the Secretary-General of the IUBS earlier and is spearheading the IUBS-led project TROP-ICSU, an initiative for promoting Climate Education by integrating it with the core science and social science curricula.
