Prof. Shyam Rai speaks at the IUPAP Conference on Computational Physics  Dec 10, 2015

Prof.  Shyam S. Rai, Chair, Earth and Climate Science at IISER Pune, presented his work at the prestigious IUPAP Conference on Computational Physics (CCP2015) held at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati from December 2 -5, 2015.

CCP is a series of conferences held annually by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) under its Commission on Computational Physics (C20). It aims to bring together computational scientists working in physics and related areas to exchange the latest developments in computational techniques and their applications.

Prof. Rai was the only Indian Plenary Speaker at this international conference. He spoke about the use of a new method known as seismic or wavefield interferometry for imaging the Earth’s interior.  The ambient seismic noise caused by wind, ocean waves, rock fracturing and anthropogenic activity contains useful information about the Earth’s subsurface in its complex wavefield. This information can be extracted using seismic interferometry. In his talk, Prof. Rai described the theory and application of this method for imaging the Earth’s interior under varied conditions and scale.
