Welcome IISER Berhampur  Oct 27, 2016

The total number of Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) in the country has now gone up to seven, with the cabinet formally approving setting up of the latest IISER at Berhampur.

IISER Berhampur, being mentored by IISER Bhopal, will be housed presently at a transit campus at Government ITI, Berhampur and will later shift to a new permanent campus. It begins operations with the first batch of 60 BS-MS students from this academic year.

The IISERs have been established with the aim of carying out research in frontier areas of science, while at the same time providing quality education at the under- as well as post-graduate levels. The five original IISERs - at Kolkata, Pune, Mohali, Bhopal and Thiruvanantapuram - were declared Institutes of National Importance under the NITSER Act of 2012. The Cabinet has now approved the proposed amendment of the Act to incorporate the two new ones: IISER Tirupati and IISER Berhampur.
